How much energy is used by televisions in the United States?

Within the U.S., there are 275 million TVs in use. Each year, they consume over 50 billion kWh of energy. In total, this amounts to four percent of household electricity use. This much electricity can power all the homes in the state of New York for an entire year.

What is DSIRE?

DSIRE stands for the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency. This is a U.S. Department of Energy funded project managed by both the Interstate Renewable Energy Council and the NC Solar Center. It is a comprehensive collection of information related to incentives and policies related to these topics. Such incentives are available at the state, local, and federal levels. They may also be available from particular utilities.

What is a greenhouse gas?

This is a gas which exists in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases absorb and emit thermal infrared radiation. They help determine the temperature of the earth through the greenhouse effect. Carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, nitrous oxide, and water vapor are a few common types.
